How about:

Congratulations Christine! 🎉

Christine took our survey and won a copy of Warren Thompson’s THE QUIET CANADIANS.

Thanks to everyone who weighed in. The survey’s still open while we prep, and your take on what a spy thriller should be will shape how Canadian this film gets to feel.

What’s the best practical action scene you’ve ever seen? No CGI. Real cars, real falls, real glass.

I’m asking because I’m 1st AD on an action-heavy feature this week, and every one of those moments is a “gag” that takes stunts, special effects, camera, props and safety all working off one plan. Michael Lerman, 1st AD on Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, once ran ten camera crews for a horse race that lasts 90 seconds. That’s the bar I’m planning toward for The Quiet Canadians.

Tell me your pick below. And if you want a say in the action in a Canadian spy film, here’s a two-minute survey, with a novel draw on Oct 31:

The Quiet Canadians is a Canadian spy thriller, adapted from Warren Thompson's novel and shooting in 2027. We're lining up brand partners for the film, and we want to choose them around the people who actually follow it, not around a guess.

Every Quiet Canadian learns four rules.

Jim Bains is about to break one.
• Do not get caught.
• Do not be seen.
• Do not give in to emotion.
• Do not outlive your usefulness.

Which one would you break first?

Special Training School 103. On farmland by the lake between Whitby and Oshawa, if you want to go look. Sabotage, silent killing, wireless, forgery. Taught in Ontario, to operatives headed for occupied Europe.
Most Canadians have driven past it without knowing.
This country has been quietly good at this for eighty years. THE QUIET CANADIANS is a contemporary story, but it stands on that ground.

September 5, 1945. Igor Gouzenko, a cipher clerk at the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa, walks out with 109 documents stuffed inside his shirt. They name a Soviet spy network operating inside Canada - in the civil service, in the military, in the labs.

The newspaper won’t run it. The Justice Ministry won’t see him. The police send him home. He tries three times before anyone listens.

What he handed over helped set the Cold War in motion, and it started here. Canada has been in this business since the beginning.

We just never built a spy story of our own. THE QUIET CANADIANS is ours… and it’s set now, not then.

Even a quiet country needs its killers.

A quiet, polite country. Universal healthcare. Genuinely nice people.
Also: secret agents, silent-killing instructors, and a spy that rivals the the CIA and MI6.
Both things are true. We’re making the movie about the second one.
The Quiet Canadians.

Nobody does it for the medal
This Sunday, 3,500 athletes line up in Roth, Germany. Challenge Roth. The largest long-distance triathlon on the planet. A 2.4-mile swim, 112 miles on the bike, then a full marathon on legs that quit an hour ago.
None of them trained a year for a medal. You don't sacrifice that much for hardware.
They came for the question. Who am I when it gets hard? What am I willing to give up to find out?
That is the question our first film asks. 13 Miles is a triathlon movie. It is also not about triathlon at all. It is about a champion, the woman who set aside her own dreams to build his, and what happens when they both start chasing something real.
We made it in Canada. We just celebrated Canada Day. So celebrate Canadian film too. It does not need permission to tell a big story about small, human things.
Roth is Sunday. The couch is right there. Watch the pros in the morning. Watch 13 Miles at night.
