Environmental Awareness Fashion Show WHAT IS JUNK TO FUNK?

The fashion show with a difference, captures the imagination of fashionistas, children and anyone who loves to get crafty and creative! This will be an opportunity for everyone to get creative while showing off their commitment to recycling, sustainability and environmental awareness 💚

Free workshops on mending, pattern making, weaving and much more will be on offer leading up to the show in May 2023.

Bea Lorimer has been part of the Junk to Funk judging crew for a few years now, but this time something clicked, she wanted to see whether any of the creations could grow beyond a one‑night showcase and evolve into real, scalable products.
So she hand‑picked two contestants (Nina Landhuis and Rudy Macdiarmid) and spent two and a half months mentoring them one‑on‑one. Together they brainstormed ideas, hunted for materials, refined designs, and worked through construction all the way to final production.
IMPORTANT part of the process was teaming up with Denisa from Island Waste Collective, who helped identify what actually ends up in landfill and what could be rescued, reimagined, and transformed into something new.

And now… here’s what came out of that journey!

🏆 Audience’s Choice Award
The votes are in, and we’re excited to announce that the winner is… THE CORAL by Michelle Lewis and Christina Jeromson! Congratulations!

Exciting plans are underway for this incredible piece! Firstly, next week it will be proudly displayed at the Waiheke Library, giving everyone a chance to admire its intricate details up close. After that, it will be permanently homed in the educational room at Recovery Park, where it will continue to inspire visitors during tours and workshops.
There is a huge potential for The Coral to become a powerful educational resource for tamariki in our community and beyond, helping spark curiosity and learning about our oceans and the need of protecting them.
Keep an eye out—Christina and Michelle have exciting plans in the works!
Over 300 hours of creativity, dedication, and craftsmanship went into bringing this epic creation to life—and now it’s ready to be celebrated by the community!

Huge Thank you to ALL who played a part in Junk To Funk 2025!
Re-Generation was the perfect theme to bring us all in to the kaupapa while paying respect to the Generation who planted the seeds and the ones to come who we trust will harvest the fruit and diversify the crops 🌱🌿🌳

To our incredible participants, who put in hundreds of creative hours,
Our mentors, stage crew, kai makers, parents & Judges and all these behind the scenes, new friends and old - who bought this to life

Thanks to Waiheke for coming along, supporting friends & family for making a wonderful and uniquely Waiheke atmosphere.

And congratulations to all who took part on that runway, designers & models alike.

More appreciation will roll out, I have no doubt.
