As a photographer, I’ve always loved a paint.
It started with Brooke Campbell and β€˜Copabella Visage’ (found by Vicki Roycroft in France in 2003) at Sydney Royal in 2013 and I’ve always loved a paint horse in my lens.

In 2016 there was another paint that just kept popping up in my lens in the rounds and more often than not I was soon standing that horse and rider next to a jump for the Champion photo!

That horse was the little mare with a heart full of try named β€˜Gypsie Queen’, campaigned at that time by Jess Rice-Ward. We would take many champion photos such was the ever-expanding resume these two compiled over time.

But Jess was not the first to share arena success with this incredible mare.

Jess Bonello β€˜found her in the bush’ and started her and ultimately jumped her to 135/ 140cm.
The two shared much success but it was time for the next little girl to experience the thrill of owning and campaigning this incredibly talented mare.

Jess Rice-Ward was introduced to riding by her Mum when she was just 2 years old.
At nine years old it was time to find her new β€˜unicorn’ and in β€˜Gypsie Queen’ that unicorn was discovered.

The two of them became a formidable partnership.
Jess was 9 years old when β€˜Gypsie Queen’ settled into the paddock and along with stable mate β€˜Kiwi Guard’ there wasn’t a State or National title that Jess didn’t win on one of them.

Jess told me β€˜Gypsie’ was just such a consistent horse.
β€˜β€™We didn’t win many big classes but she consistently won and placed at every event we entered. I’d confidently say there wasn’t a show where she didn’t come home with a ribbon’’.

Jess added β€˜β€™She’s also been and won everywhere!’’
β€˜β€™Sydney Royal, State Championships, AQUIS, Australian Championships, and she took me around the Junior Australian Championships when I was 11yo and jumped clear, she was my best friend, just exactly the way she is now with Sylvie, β€˜Gypsie’ is the best soul’’.

In 2017 Jess sold β€˜Gypsie Queen’ to Olivia Hewitt-Toms who at that time was living up in Kuranda near Cairns.

In 2018 Olivia qualified for Interschools Show Jumping at Werribee, Victoria along with her older sister Jamie so Dad (Chris) and Mum (Terry) along with their chihuahua β€˜Charlie’ travelled 3600km south down the road for the sisters to compete.
Another lap around the country for β€˜Gyps’!!

For the next few years Olivia and β€˜Gypsie’ campaigned very successfully around the country and won many, many more titles and ribbons.

Then in late 2023 β€˜Gypsie Queen’ moved to the Lockyer Valley, to what would become her forever home with another little girl who was beyond excited to have such a superstar mare to call her own and the bond between the two was evident from day one.

A 9yo Sylvie Rudder rode her first competition round on β€˜Gypsie Queen’ on the 13th January 2024
No fairytale, no blue ribbon but a completed first round. Everybody breathe!

What has happened in the time since then really just adds to the legacy of this extra-ordinary mare and is a testament to finding the right β€˜next owner’ for your special horse.

At (we think) rising 23yo, β€˜Gypsey Queen’ is arguably a β€˜schoolmaster but results don’t just turn-up with the name of a horse, you’ve still got to be able to ride and all three girls up until Sylvie so far have more than proven their status as elite riders. And little Sylvie is well on her way to a big future in the sport of Show Jumping.

Quite by accident I saw the name β€˜Gypsie Queen’ on the 90cm draw at the 2025 Interschools Championships on Saturday and stayed around to watch (not photograph) the jump off.

In the interim, I heard a whisper that this was the last competition before retirement for β€˜Gyps’, and that this amazing now 23yo mare she would retire after Sunday’s last round.

So arena side I stood, Sunday midday, for a 238.2.1 a one rounder against the clock at the 2025 Horseland Interschools Championships

Sylvie and β€˜Gypsie’ were fourth out and they came into the arena with three clear rounds under their belt over the preceding days, could they do it one more time?

And clear they went, now just seven more combinations to watch and hope the time would see them place!

And place they did!
Now just to wait and see if the aggregate scores would deliver a final ribbon before retirement for β€˜Gypsie Queen’

Not just a ribbon, but a champion rug too!
They β€˜retire’ as the 2025 Horseland Australian Interschool Championships Primary 90cm Show Jumping Champions having jumped 4 clear rounds over the course of the show
What a story, what a wonderful little combination.
What a fairytale brumby!

And a second rug was to follow as a member of the Champion Queensland Primary Show Jumping Team!

Enjoy your retirement β€˜Gyps’ what an incredible career
Thank you for the many, many special moments you have given your owners / riders and everyone watching on, including me through the camera, it’s been a privilege to watch you on course.

And all the best to Sylvie, she’ll have a little break from riding before her new horse β€˜I’m A Cowboy’ currently owned and campaigned by Harriet Smith arrives for the next chapter in this young riders career, a career that is off to a wonderful start just like the little girls before her who all had a dream too.

Congratulations Team New South Wales, the winning Eventing Team at the 2025 Horseland Australian Interschools Championships closely followed by Team Queensland and Team Victoria.

The competitors faced strong Cross Country courses, many questions asked and these 'kids' answered in spades, so many going clear and under time, such a privilege to witness.

Look out Maryland 5 Star, Kentucky, Burghley, Luhmulhen, Les Etoiles de Pau and of course our very own Adelaide 5*, we've got some kids on the way!

Congratulations to all nominations on a very, very impressive competition.

Too much fun?
Too much energy?
Too much enthusiasm?
Too much support?
Too much noise? (it was loooouuud!!)
Too much love of our amazing horses?

Never too much !
And it was never going to be too much of a joy to host and have you all here at the 2025 Horseland Australian Interschool Championships!

As CEO of Equestrian NSW Vireena Peacock noted in her closing speech, this is one of the biggest events ever hosted here at SIEC outside of the Olympic Games and all of you amazing young people were part of that record. Thank you for travelling from far and wide to be part of this week.

It's been an incredible four days of competition, an even more incredible week of comradery, reacquainting and making new friends from all around this amazing country of ours and sharing our love of the amazing animal and friend we have in our beautiful horses who individually and collectively put on the most amazing display of their versatility and skill across all the disciplines that were competed in.
Just incredible.

We hope you enjoyed the 2025 Horseland Australian Interschool Championship event as much as we loved having you all here.

There are many photos, stories and results to come but let’s sign off tonight with the State Awards.

Congratulations to Team NSW who are the recipients of the Harry le Bherz Perpetual Trophy which is award to the State with the highest accumulative points across all team riders in all classes.

From way across the Nullarbor it’s a huge congratulations to Team Western Australia who are the recipients of the Equestrian Australia Interschool Trophy which is awarded to the team with the highest accumulative rider points for a State Team with less than 50 riders.

And last but certainly not least, the EA Australian Interschool Championships β€˜Teamwork Trophy’ which is awarded to the State team that shows Team Work and team spirit (and this year added to that list, BEST SOCKS’!) and that team is Team South Australia!

And we want to say a massive thank you to Leticia Dall, Marketing Manager at Horseland for presenting all the ribbons, rugs, trophies and awards at the 2025 Horseland Australian Interschool Chaminships.

What most don't witness is just how much is done behind the scenes to make an event like this happen and you were in there boots and all workng with the event team so we say a huge thank you!

And once again, thank you Horseland for being our naming rights sponsor, we hope you are as thrilled as we are to have you guys as such an amazing company supporting our sport.

Congratulations everyone, what an awesome week.

It was another amazing day of competition at the 2025 Horseland Australian Interschool Championships and at its conclusion a raft of new, talented and deserving riders had their names etched into the history books as champions of their sport.

Across the venue the arenas were full of activity with the second competition day in the Ashbree Saddlery sponsored Dressage events including the Prix St Georges, Advanced and Novice rounds along with our Primary and Secondary athletes with a Disability whilst in the Jumping Arenas it was round two across all height classes and, as covered earlier, the final Cross Country phase to complete the eventing program.

Congratulations to all of today’s champions and placegetters and we look forward to introducing our final list of both individual and State Team champions tomorrow!

The four eventing classes run as part of the 2025 Horseland Australian Interschool Championships have seen some quite extra-ordinary results.

In the EvA 80cm class we found out just how good NSW rider Mara McGavern and β€˜Found Out’ were finishing at the top of the leaderboard on their dressage score of 29.10 penalties, a score that saw them finish fourth in that phase but a clear jumping phase and a second place finish in today’s Cross Country saw this talented combination take out top spot.

Victorian Rider Tayla Anderson and β€˜Casino Nights’ were almost a safe bet to claim the EvA95 title coming into today’s Cross Country with a strong lead after a superb Dressage phase that saw them mark just 24.70 penalties to win the phase and they then went clear in the Show Jumping phase to hold a 6.60 penalty lead. Today, they were the top placegetters in the Cross County phase to maintain their lead and earn the overall top honours making for a very happy trip back down the Hume to home!

In the CCN1* class all eyes were on Queensland rider Sophia Anthony with good reason!

After the Dressage phase Sophia held first place on her first nomination β€˜Lagoes Choice with 28.20 penalties and was sitting in second on β€˜Quantico’ with 9.60 penalties, very impressive indeed.

In the Show Jumping phase Sophia went all clear on β€˜Quantico’ but had a rail on β€˜Lagoes Choice’ to drop them back to fourth and despite them winning the Cross Country phase today, that’s where they would stay.

But on β€˜Quantico’ in the Cross Country Sophia had an almost perfect day on course placing second in the phase to retain her lead to be crowned the 2025 CCN1* Horseland Australian Interschools Champion pairing.

But that’s not the end of the story but before we finish it, let’s meet our CCN2* champion.

New South Wales rider Liam MacKenzie-Smith and β€˜Sandhills Invader’ completed the Dressage phase in seventh place on a score of 35.50 penalties. After the Show Jumping phase 50% of the small but talented field had incurred penalties and now Liam was perhaps with reach of winning the National title.

In today’s Cross Country phase, he went clear to finish fourth in the phase but those ahead of him who did complete the course started the day with higher penalties and with an elimination and a retirement from two of the top contenders Liam was elevated to champion for the CCN2* class for 2025. Congratulations!

π—¦π—£π—˜π—–π—œπ—”π—Ÿ 𝗔π—ͺ𝗔π—₯𝗗
From our four class champions there is a further honour that is bestowed along with that of the title of Australian Champion for their class. The β€˜Closest to Ideal Time Eventing Trophy’ is awarded to the athlete who returns the closest to optimum time (under time) on the cross country with zero jumping penalties and today it is a thrill to announce that the winner of this most prestigious trophy is Sophia Anthony and β€˜Quantico’ who completed their CCN1* course 6 seconds under optimal time!

Congratulations Sophia and to all our champions and a huge thank you to all the volunteers and folks who made this an extremely well-run, safe and successful cross country phase to complete what has been an awesome eventing competition.
