2023 marks 20 years since the U.S. invasion of Iraq. It is a heavy time for Iraqis. So much of the war has been told from the perpetrators. From the invading war veterans who committed atrocities in Iraq. But Iraqi stories FROM Iraqis have been scarcely seen or platformed.

Before becoming one of the largest exporters of TV dramas in the world, Turkey had ‘Yeşilçam’ (Green Pine), a metonym for the Turkish film industry, similar to Hollywood in the United States.
Throughout the 1970s and 80s, Yeşilçam regularly churned out low-budget versions of Hollywood box office smashes and they came with a Turkish makeover. Some of these films have now reached a cult status.
Do you know any other remakes of famous Western films made in Turkey or broader SWANA?
Does this song sound familiar?
‘Misirlou’ is a well-known folk song throughout the SWANA region. The word Misirlou is rooted in the Arabic term for Egypt – Misr. Add the suffix -li/-lou, and the word becomes Misirli/Misirlou and means “from Egypt”, or “Egyptian” in Turkish and Greek.
While the song’s original composer is unknown, it became popular with Armenian, Arabic, Jewish and Greek musicians in the 1920s. Then, in 1962, Dick Dale’s surf rock version of the song introduced it to the Western world. It later gained renewed popularity when director Quentin Tarantino used it in his 1994 film Pulp Fiction, and again when it was sampled in the Black Eyed Peas’ song “Pump It” in 2006.
