Psychological safety under consequence.

Last week Courtney Humphreys was invited by the League Ahead team to share her PhD research with NRL, NRLW and pathways Wellbeing and Education Managers at Tangalooma Island Resort.

Courtney told the story across a season, showing how fragile psychological safety and belonging become as pressure, adversity and consequences intensify. At its heart her work asks how organisations make psychological safety and belonging workable not despite consequence, but under it: during scrutiny, performance decline, non-selection, contract decisions and media narratives. She also connected the research to the psychosocial risk legislation, with practical steps on how to identify hazards in the way the demands of the environment are designed.

She also hosted a panel with Kevin Kingston (Penrith Panthers), Shaun Lane (RLPA) and Chontelle Balbi (Sydney Roosters NRLW), an honest conversation about the hardest moments they navigate and how they create, protect and rebuild psychological safety when pressure is at its greatest.
