Australia's first national emergency alert test is happening on Monday 27th July. Every phone will vibrate and play a loud siren sound for about 10 seconds. For many autistic people, an unexpected noise like this can be distressing. A bit of preparation makes a real difference.
The test happens at 2:00pm AEST, 1:30pm ACST and 12:00pm AWST.
Three things that help:
1. Talk about it beforehand. Knowing the sound is coming, and that it means everything is OK, takes away the shock.
2. Plan for the sound. Headphones, a quiet room, or switching the phone off are all fine options.
3. Stay close. Count the 10 seconds together, then it's over.
Everyone is safe and no action is needed on the day.
Please share this with families, schools and support workers so no one is caught off guard. More info at
