Ross Arts Festival
The inaugural Ross Arts Festival was held over three days on the 25th - 27th October 2019 The festival included sculptors, musicians, writers and numerous local and Tasmanian artists and artisans participating in four main events as well as pop up art exhibitions in several venues throughout the village. The festival launch on Friday evening 25th October included judging and prize giving for the sculpture competition 'Set In Stone' the Daniel Herbert Prize. This new stone sculpture competition was one of the highlights of the Festival which will be held in October each year. The prize gives reverence and pays homage to the creator of the carvings on the Ross Bridge, Daniel Herbert. Saturday morning 26th October the writer’s forum, 'The Agony and the Ecstasy' was presented by three published authors from Ross and Campbell Town. The theme for this event was both the pain and the joy involved in the creation of a novel. On Saturday afternoon the Uniting Church, which dominates the skyline of Ross, hosted a musical concert. 'Strings in Spring' a classical ensemble presented by Camerata Obscura, a musical group from Launceston area, directed by Christopher Bearman OAM, Classical Violinist and Conductor, born in the UK now residing in Ross. Sunday 27th October the 'Arts Market' in the town hall with artists and artisans from all over Tasmania was a great success. There were jewellers, wood craftspeople, painters, photographers, potters, writers, candlestick makers and many more.
With Ross being recognised as one of the Finest Heritage Villages in Tasmania, the Arts Festival Society hoped this inaugural event would evolve and put Ross on the map as one of the best Arts Festivals on the Tasmanian Calendar. Then we all know what happened in 2020. The 2020 Festival was cancelled and all we could do is look forward with hope that the Festival planned for 2021, Ross’s Bicentennial year, will be one to remember.
See you all in October 2021.
