Take a close look and you’ll spot drilled discs in David Schmidt’s XR8 – a clue it’s not any old FG Falcon. “Ford sold six FG XR8s to special company people – and we happened to know one of them – we’re pretty sure it was Rob Herrod’s personal car.” Along with some of the factory special bits, the track tune sees 375rwkW which – given the rain – saw the blue Ford wheelspin on the strip “There’s just no grip!” for a 13.8 second ET. “It can do a 1:40 around Winton and 200km/h down the straight – and it’s not much of a straight.”

“Honestly, I’m not here to try and break records, I’m just here to have fun. It’s all about having fun – there’s a lot of competitive cars out there with sticky tyres and an old box Falcon isn’t one of them, so I just go out there and have fun,” said Nathan of Hackshop Garage.

The white XE dragged its rear – given the regs and weather called for street rubber – but the car otherwise looked as 1982 showroom as they come despite the AU inline six under the bonnet and Nathan’s inability – nay, utter dislike – of driving in a straight line even on the drag strip! “I’m gonna take it easy … no I’m not”

Tim Harper drove his stunning 65 Riviera – all 5.2 metres (208 inches) of it – all the way from Adelaide. “Why trailer it?” he said. “It’s my motorkhana car – perfect for motorkhanas!” Tim laughed. With its fuel-injected 401-cube nail-head V8, Turbo 400 and massive 9.75-inch Buick diff sending down the Calder quarter in 14.9 seconds, you’d think Tim would’ve been unhappy with the wet weather on the road course. Wrong again. “It’s a good thing cause I still have the factory drum brakes! These things have massive, aluminium ribbed drums – you see them on hot rods, they’re very popular!”

All the way from Queensland, Mercury’s Nissan Z stands out – and that’s’ the way she likes it. “It’s my drift car but I thought I’d give USC a go,” she told us. “We haven’t done a whole lot of performance mods but a fair few handling modifications– we use MCA Suspension, we’ve upgraded the steering angle which is fantastic for drifting (with a GKTech Super Lock kit) – but the majority of mods have been for quality of life rather as opposed to performance – it can survive a beating.”

Matt Sadler from GJ Drivelines rocked up in his GTS Maloo and ran a flat 12s in the slippery drag portion – not bad for a factory flier. “This event’s great as you get plenty of time in the car,” Matt reckons. “The car’s just got a camshaft, standard blower, exhaust and a standard 6L90 trans – but with manual diff gear, so 3:7 instead of 3:2 – it should be faster. “This is a full street car – Shock Works put some coil-overs in it, a bit of camber, and it makes 450kW on the rollers – it should do mid-11s in a perfect world.”

The track debut for this Street Machine feature car from June 2024, Dean Trounson’s 205-cube stroker six HR – with some serious teamwork from brother Shaun – was a standout looker and track tearer. “It was built to handle and there’s only so much you can do on the street” said Dean. That means front coil-overs two-way adjustable shocks on the rear – two-inch drop spindles on the front to eliminate bump-steer – and Wilwood brakes. Did the combo work? “Going through the chicanes, it just stayed planted,” said Dean.

Steve Deward’s Sting Red Monaro has an L98 with forged internals and a blower attached, with its AP Racing brakes one of the biggest upgrades over the stock stoppers helping pull up the 530rwkW Munro on full Air Ride Suspension. And, it still has the factory six-speed cog-swapper! “It’s a bit of a handful – I have to be careful with the manual, obviously – it’s clean, nice and I love it.”

Peter Chapman’s Jeep Trackhawk packed 700hp from the factory 6.2-litre blown V8 to reel off a 10.76 second quarter – beaten only by the winning M3 – and while not afraid of the rain, Peter still saw a bit of off-roading in the Autocross comp. “I’ve just gone straight ahead in the mud and I just thought, ‘Mate, I’m staying on it!’ It had no heat in the tyres, no heat in the brakes, but I stayed on it on the mud – I could see mud flying out the side!”

A fan and competitor favourite, James Feros’ Harrop-blown 5.0-litre HK made its track debut after being driven from Wollongong in its factory Pyrmont Green and its steam-punk engine bay with its custom chain drive. “I was quite resourceful throughout the build,” James laughed. With its custom front-end, four-link rear and widened factory looked wheels, the HK couldn’t put its 443rwhp down on the wet drag strip but was ultra-fast for an old Holden on the Autocross with a stunning 58.6-second time. “I tried to mess with the dynamics, the geometry of the car for the track.” A job well done.

“It’s a full RTR spec Mustang – supercharged with 810hp – it’s all ADR-approved, road-legal, stock cats – just running on 98 octane,” James Johnson said of his RTR Mustang, which came home in fourth – the first V8 entry. “It’s a street car – you can take it down and registered. We wanted to bring it down and show a 100 percent street car – out of the box off the showroom floor – and see how fast it can be.” So how fast was it? It was fastest of the lot – including the winning BMW – on the full-lap road course and the Autokhana, only falling back with its 12.7 quarter and slower go-to-whoa

Fifth in the 23-strong Muscle class, Jason's 393-stoker XT packs 420hp at the wheels “on a hot day with a s**t exhaust” he says. The donk – teamed with a TR6060 FG Falcon tr**ny and a nine-inch diff – had only been in a week after the previous 351 ate a valve. “It’s the engine’s first event – it hasn’t broken so I’m happy. This is a family wagon – my kids have grown up in it, I’ve had it for 25 years. It’s evolved from the grocery getter to the fun car”. In the wet, there was no point chasing a time, the Falcon putting on a show: “It was raining, so it was time to go have fun…” The wagon still did a 12.6!
