Congratulations to the winners and finalists of this years inaugural Tasmanian Mushroom Festival photo competition!

Our winner......Lepista Nuda, Shauna Mayben
Shauna receives a tour of Tunnel Hill Mushrooms for two
"An image that focuses solely on the subject and throws everything else away. This sort of image is extremely difficult to perfect but in this case it has been achieved without flaw. The delicate underside of the fungi is highlighted in exquisite detail. Beautiful colour and tonal variation, perfect exposure and focus and perfect use of compositional rules combine to make this a standout image. A truly unique and masterful image of fungi". Brett Guy

Highly commended:
Frost Fortress of Solitude, Kate Rollins
Underneath the looking glass, Kate Rollins
Lemon Delight, Shontelle Lorenzo
Each recipient receives a grow kit from West Tamar Fungi

Emerging photographer award: Popping up pink, Karen Robinson
Karen receives a one-on-one photography workshop with Brett Guy Photography.

Thank you to Brett Guy for his time and thoughtful notes on each photographer's photo. Thank you to each person who had a go, got out into nature, took their favourite shot and sent it in, it was fabulous to see.

The Great Aussie Fungi Hunt!

Tamar Walton, Fungimap coordinator is a Tasmanian, with a background in marine science and conservation. Tamara will be talking about the Great Aussie Fungi Hunt on Sunday, 24 May at the Tasmanian Mushroom Festival at Brewlab .

Fungimap is Australia’s national fungi mapping and conservation organisation.
It is citizen science initiative dedicated to recording and understanding Australia’s incredible fungal diversity. With over 50,000 species of fungi estimated to exist across the country, many still unknown or poorly documented, Fungimap plays a vital role in building knowledge that supports conservation, research, and environmental awareness.

The Great Aussie Fungi Hunt asks you to upload photos to the iNaturalist platform https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/fungimap-australia

This is what I call my 'Marilyn' photo. I remember where it was taken, and who I was with. By creating stories of what you capture you can transport yourself back to that time. This is what Yoav of Giant Tree Expeditions talks about on his walks, also with a great many ecological observations that put what you see into context.

Now, it's not as clear as I would like and that is where Kim Ogden from Elysian Portrait Photographycomes in. Kim has had her work exhibited in galleries in magazines around Tasmania and will take you through how to get the good shot........with DSLR and Smartphone. And I have a brand-new camera that is itching for a workout.

Tomorrow (Saturday, 23 May) we have a walk at Ferntree where you will learn these skills and walk away with a more connected experience for the next time you take a walk in nature. If you'd like to join there are a few spots left. Meeting at 10am at the park opposite Ferntree Tavern

Jamil Kay is an honours student studying at the University of Tasmania. His research focuses on the symbiotic relationship between trees and mycorrhizal fungi.

Specifically, his project has sought to uncover whether invasive pine trees (Pinus radiata) disrupt native fungal symbioses with Eucalypts, and whether this disruption is causing declines in the growth and health of Eucalypts.

Come and hear Jamil present on this fascinating topic on Sunday, 24 May at Brewlab at the Tasmanian Mushroom Festival - “Underground besties: the life-giving connection between mushrooms and trees"

The standard of entries in this year’s mushroom photo competition has been genuinely impressive. The creativity, technical skill, and eye for detail on display made the judging both a delight and a challenge. Every photographer should feel proud of their contribution, and it has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm for celebrating Tasmania’s fungi.
