Closing the inaugural Gladstone Art Science Innovation Fest - Day 2 2025 is premiere
"Big Ears and the art of noticing - BEAN"
16 August 2025
Canoe Point, Tannum Sands ~4:30pm sunset

About the work:
BEAN is a sunset soundwalk. While it is true that our ears do not grow forever, Big Ears and the Art of Noticing opens a doorway to listening together in place as we feel our ears grow.
5 episodes, 5 stops
30 minutes
What do you hear?
What did you hear?
Moving beyond conventional approaches to a concert, BEAN sonically explores, amplifies, draws focus, and comments on the liminal space between Canoe Point park and the beach; between the bushland and the built environment; between then and now.

We walk, listen and notice the approaching sunset while our ears are secretly growing.
Big Ears and the Art of Noticing

"Vanessa has the technique, the sensitivity, the voice and the sense of dramatic timing that enable her to create... a distinctive and original art form". The Advertiser (Adelaide)

About the artist:
Vanessa Tomlinson works at the intersection of music interpretation, improvisation and composition seeking new artistic platforms to share ideas around listening, ecological change, place and curiosity. As a percussionist she has been touring the world for 35 years, premiering works, collaborating with musicians and working across artforms. As a composer she focuses on speculative text-based compositions, object-based re-purposing, and deep sonic gatherings that stimulate our imagination as we listen in a climate-transforming world. As a curator she makes events in improbable locations from rockfaces, to bushland, gathering people in place and activating audiences toward deep listening. Vanessa has won 7 Art Music Awards, 2 Green Room Awards, an Australian Council Project Fellowship, been artist in residence at the Smithsonian Institute, received an Asialink residency, worked extensively in Sichuan province of China, released multiple albums, received a Doctorate from University of California, San Diego, and is currently Professor of Music at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University in Australia.
