YOKOHAMA WORLD QUILT FESTIVAL NOVEMBER 2025
Bundaberg Quilters Inc was privileged to recieve an invitation from the Japan Quilt Society (JQS) Secretariat to exhibit twenty of our members quilts at the Yokohama World Quilt Festival in November 2025.
Imagine the surprise when I announced this special invitation to our members. We were in the middle of organising our Quilt Exhibition at the Multiplex Centre, Bundaberg for August, where we displayed over two hundred quilts.
Dai Ikeda from Patchwork Ninja who was a trader at our event, agreed to oversee the selection process. A challenging & difficult task, he made us proud by giving such good advice, from so many beautiful quilts to showcase. The quilts ranged from Traditional, Modern, Contemporary, Art & Scenic of all sizes. It was such a diverse selection of high standard quilts.
The JQS arranged all the transportation, before we knew it, the quilts were packed and on their way to Japan. Four of our members ( including myself) joined Dai's Ninja Tour which included a visit to the festival. A brilliant tour, and the excitement & anticipation growing. Other members of our club were also in attendance.
The Exhibition could not have been better, so much space and the lighting & display was excellent. The festival recorded over 22,000 visitors, an increase in attendance numbers spells out its popularity.
The show was just fabulous, with displays from four other countries including of course the magnificent quilts & garments from Japan.
We are proud to say Bundaberg Quilters were the only club from Australia to exhibit - What an honour.
It was an exciting, emotional time, almost surreal, and we were made to feel very welcome.
I spent time talking with visitors from all of the world, answering questions, talking about Bundaberg, Qld, and of course our quilt club, discussing details of the work, our members and their quilts, recieving valuable feedback and wonderful compliments.
I will never forgot this special day and to be able to share it with such gracious Quilters was incredibly special indeed.
